Philadelphia - America's Local Post Capital

Philadelphia in the 1840s-1860s supported one of the richest ecosystems of private local postal operations in America. Blood's Penny Post, Briggs' Despatch, Cressman & Co.'s Penny Post, and Clinton's Penny Post among others competed vigorously to carry letters within the city at rates cheaper than the federal post. When Congress moved to suppress private mails and establish free city delivery, the entire ecosystem collapsed virtually overnight - and the stamps they left behind became immediate targets for the Victorian forgery trade. Period forgeries of these Philadelphia locals are recognized 19th-century antique items in their own right, studied and documented by the Carriers and Locals Society.

Condition

Imperforate on all sides. No gum. Old hinge remnant visible on reverse. Small thin near the top left edge - clearly visible from the back and noted for full transparency. The front presents with a clear, sharp impression despite the fault. No tears.
