Brady & Co. operated a private local post in New York City, issuing this distinctive one-cent stamp - red on yellow, featuring a wheelbarrow-style delivery cart - around 1857. The genuine stamp is scarce, and the collector demand for it in the Victorian philatelic market made it a natural target for the era's most prolific forgers.

This example is printed in red on yellow, the correct color combination of the genuine stamp. It displays original gum, never hinged, with the gum showing the characteristic deep yellowing and aging consistent with 19th-century production - a strong indicator this is not a modern reproduction but a genuine antique forgery. Close examination of the design reveals the shading lines on the left side of the vignette are more coarsely rendered than on the genuine stamp, consistent with the known characteristics of period forgeries of this issue. The "O"s should also be checked against the Lyons Identifier types documented by the Carriers and Locals Society.

S. Allan Taylor - The Prince of Forgers

Samuel Allan Taylor (1838-1913) was the most prolific forger of United States local stamps in philatelic history, producing an estimated 700+ bogus and forged labels from his operations in Montreal, New York, and Boston between roughly 1862 and 1891. His productions were sold openly into the collector trade of the era - a time when filling album spaces with "facsimiles" was widely accepted practice - and are today recognized as collectible antique artifacts in their own right. George Hussey was another documented forger of the Brady & Co. issue.

Condition

Original gum, never hinged. Imperforate as issued (both genuine stamps and period forgeries of this issue are imperforate). Paper shows age-appropriate toning. Gum is deeply yellowed, consistent with 19th-century vintage. A small natural paper irregularity visible at lower left on the back (see scan).
