On September 14, 2010 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the USPS issued the 26th installment of the Literary Arts Series honoring poet Julia Constancia Burgos García. She is considered by many to be the greatest poet born in Puerto Rico, and is considered one of the greatest poets of America. She was an ardent civil rights activist for women and African/Afro-Caribbean writers, and an advocate for the independence of Puerto Rico. Julia de Burgos was born on February 17, 1914 in Puerto Rico and died on July 6, 1953 in New York City NY at the age of 39.
