On May 15 2006 in Kyle TX the USPS issued the 22nd addition to the Literary Arts series honoring Katherine Anne Porter. Novelist and short-story writer, Porter was born in Indian Creek, Texas, a great-great-granddaughter of Daniel Boone. Known for her penetrating insight; her work deals with dark themes such as betrayal, death and the origin of human evil. Her long short stories were written in flawless prose, with a complexity usually found only in novels. She received national acclaim for her collection, Pale Horse, Pale Rider (1939). Her Collected Short Stories (1965) won Porter the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Ship of Fools (1962) was Porter's only novel and a best-seller. It is about the kind of lazy, foolish, and irresponsible people who made the rise of fascism possible. Catherine Porter died in 1980 at the age of 90.
