On July 22, 1998 the USPS issued the 15th addition to the Literary Arts Series, honoring Stephen Vincent Benet. An American author, poet, short story writer and novelist, Benet is often best known for his narrative poem "John Brown's Body", and also for short stories including "The Devil and Daniel Webster" and "By the Waters of Babylon" In writing both poetry and prose, Benet combined detailed accounts of historical events with fiction and folklore. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1938. Benet was born on July 22, 1898 and died on March 13, 1943 at the age of 44.
