This is a numbered plate block of 4 stamps as pictured. (plate number may vary from stock picture) On April 11, 1996 in Boston, MA., on the 100th anniversary of the Boston Marathon the USPS issued this stamp to honor all marathons. The contemporary design, which features a stylized runner with wings sprouting from his feet, was inspired by the Greek legend of Hermes. A messenger of the gods, Hermes was often depicted wearing winged sandals.
