In 1995 the USPS issued this stamp to celebrate the Republic of Palau's first year of independence. Following World War II, Palau became a Trust Territory of the United States - a condition resulting from the chaos that followed the break-up of Japan's World War II empire. On Jan. 1, 1994, Palau became an independent republic.
