After raising the funds to establish a school that would provide higher education for women at an affordable cost, Mary Lyon founded the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. Today, it is known as Mount Holyoke College and offers two years of general education in liberal arts and two years of concentrated studies in one of twenty-four academic areas. Lyon is pictured on the 2 Great Americans stamp. Issued between 1980 and 1999, the Great Americans definitive series features 63 designs, making it the largest set of face different Regular Issue stamps issued in the 20th century. One stamp honors a couple (Lila and Dewitt Wallace) while the remaining 62 commemorate individuals. The series is characterized by a standard definitive size, simple design and monochromatic colors. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing produced most of the stamps, but some were printed by private firms. Several stamps saw multiple printings. The result is many different varieties, with tagging being the key to understanding them.

These are real USPS postage stamps that are accepted by the USA Postal Service as payment for mail posted in the USA however the total rates on the stamps posted must equal or exceed the current appropriate postal mailing rate or extra postage must be paid.
