On May 18 1978 in Washington DC the USPS honored Dr Georgios Papanicolaou who, 50 years, prior discovered that uterine cancer could be diagnosed by means of a vaginal smear in 1928. The stamp not only honors the doctor and his work, but reminds us that early detection of cervical cancer is the best defense against this disease
