On October 4, 1961 in Washington DC; the US Post Office Dept celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Frederic Remington, an American painter & sculptor who specialized in depictions of the old American West. Most of his works were of cowboys, American Indians and the U.S. Calvary. Depicted here on this 4 commemorative stamp is a section of his painting "The Smoke Signal". Frederic Remington was born on October 4, 1861 and died on December 26, 1909 at the age of 48.
