1959 Lafayette Jupiter Balloon Airmail Plate Block Of 4 7c Postage Stamps - Sc# C54 - MNH, OG - CW397
On August 17 1959 at Lafayette IN., the USPS commemorated the 100th anniversary of the first carriage of airmail in the United States on the hot-air balloon Jupiter. The balloon was flown by John Wise from Lafayette to Crawfordsville, Indiana, on August 17, 1859. There were 123 letters eventually mailed this way, and as of 1980, 23 were still know to exist.
These are real USPS postage stamps that are accepted by the USA Postal Service as payment for mail posted in the USA however the total rates on the stamps posted must equal or exceed the current appropriate postal mailing rate or extra postage must be paid.
