This is a numbered plate block of 4 stamps as pictured. On July 31, 1948, the US Post Office honored William Allen White, a renowned American newspaper editor, politician, author, and leader of the Progressive movement. Between 1896 and his death White became the iconic spokesman for Middle America. In his novels and short stories, White developed his idea of the small town as a metaphor for understanding social change and for preaching the necessity of community.
