1940 Trans-Pacific Airmail Cover Rochester Manila C22 Pair Reverse Franking

Spectacular and visually dramatic transpacific airmail cover mailed November 1, 1940 from Rochester, New York to Manila, Philippines, with the entire reverse side covered in a colorful array of U.S. commemorative and airmail stamps - applied per the printed instruction "See Reverse Side for Stamps" on the front.

Sent by Lawyers Co-operative Publishing Company, Rochester, N.Y. to their own Manila office, with bold printed routing "By Trans-Pacific Route - Via Air Mail." Rochester November 1, 1940 dispatch cancel on front; Manila November 12, 1940 arrival cancel on reverse - an eleven-day transpacific transit fully documented by both cancels.

The reverse franking includes:

* Block of 4 - 3c Coronado Centennial 1940 (Scott 898)
* Block of 4 - 5c Daniel Chester French (Scott 887)
* Block of 4 - 10c Frederic Remington (Scott 888)
* Pair - 50c Trans-Pacific Airmail (Scott C22) - the key stamps, appropriately used on a cover actually routed via the transpacific service
* 3c Wyoming Statehood 50th Anniversary (Scott 897)
* 5c Dr. Walter Reed (Scott 877)
* 20c James Garfield (Scott 638)

The total franking of approximately $2.28 is consistent with the transpacific airmail rate for a heavier piece in 1940. The use of the C22 Trans-Pacific airmail stamps on a cover actually carried by that service is entirely appropriate and always sought after by airmail collectors.

The dramatic all-stamps reverse, the C22 pair, the documented dual cancels, and the self-addressed business cover origin combine to make this one of the more compelling prewar transpacific covers you will encounter.

Condition: Very Good. Lightweight airmail paper with typical surface texture for the cover type. Some soiling to front consistent with age and a vertical crease. Stamps mostly fresh and well struck. See photos carefully.
