1939 Philippines Via Clipper Cover Manila Seattle 2P Surcharge Commonwealth #369

Attractive prewar transpacific Clipper cover mailed from Manila December 22, 1939 to C.M. Lovsted & Co., Inc., Seattle, Washington via Pan American Airways Clipper service.

Franked with a 2-peso surcharge overprint on the 1.4-peso Philippines Commonwealth Arms stamp (Scott 369 surcharged) tied by Manila December 22, 1939 cancel - an interesting surcharge usage at the correct transpacific airmail rate. Bold purple boxed "Via Clipper" handstamp applied at left center.

The cover is printed on the lightweight onionskin-type airmail paper characteristic of the period. This material naturally presents with surface texture and is not to be confused with damage - overall condition is quite good for this inherently fragile cover type, with only minor corner wear as visible in photos.

Mailed just two years before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor brought regular transpacific Clipper service to an abrupt and permanent end, making prewar commercial Clipper covers like this a finite and historically resonant collecting category.

Condition: Very Good to Fine for the cover type. Lightweight airmail paper with typical surface texture. Minor corner wear. See photos.
