1936 Hindenburg First Flight Zeppelin Postcard LZ-129 Lakehurst Trans-Atlantic

A remarkable piece of aviation and postal history - a picture postcard carried aboard the LZ-129 Hindenburg on its inaugural trans-Atlantic passenger flight from Frankfurt am Main to Lakehurst, New Jersey, May 1936.

The address side bears a pair of U.S. Scott #567 20-cent Golden Gate stamps (40¢ total franking), cancelled New York May 4, 1936. A large illustrated purple cachet depicts the Hindenburg over the globe with the text "Lakehurst Trans-Atlantic / First Flight" and "Frankfurt-am-Main." The black Frankfurt backstamp reads "Mit Luftschiff Hindenburg Befördert / 14.5.36" (Transported by Airship Hindenburg), with the LZ-129 designation clearly visible. The card is handwritten "By First Flight Hindenburg / Lakehurst" and addressed to Mrs. Emily O'Reilly, 36 Water St., Toms River, N.J.

The picture side shows a period real-photo postcard image of the Hindenburg in flight, registration D-LZ129 visible on the hull, with Olympic rings also shown - consistent with the 1936 Olympic year. Swastika tail markings visible, accurate to the period livery of Third Reich Germany's national airship fleet.

Card shows honest age toning and soiling consistent with 90 years. The cachets, cancels, and franking are all clear and legible. A genuine, flown first-flight piece.
