1933 Dirigible Airship 65th Anniversary Cover Bethlehem Pennsylvania Leimbach

Commemorative cover marking the 65th Anniversary of the First Dirigible Air Ship, cancelled July 3, 1933 at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Moravian Station. The cover features a detailed illustrated engraving of Dr. Augustin Leimbach's 1868 dirigible, signed by the artist Knight, accompanied by a printed account of the historic attempt: the 50-foot silk-covered wooden frame craft rose over a hundred feet before the bag began to leak, and on the second attempt the bag exploded and the ship "came down hopelessly ruined." Franked with the 1½ cent Washington bicentennial stamp (Scott 707), tied by Bethlehem Moravian Station cancel. Reverse is clean. Minor toning at lower right corner consistent with age.
