On April 22, 1994 in Dallas TX; the USPS issued these stamps in recognition of the African-American heroes of the American West. The Buffalo Soldiers. in spite of discrimination, and often working with inferior equipment, became among the most decorated U.S. military regiments ever. Buffalo Soldiers originally were members of the U.S. 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, formed on September 21, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The nickname was given to the "Negro Cavalry" by the Native American tribes they fought, who thought him as tough as a charging buffalo; the term eventually became synonymous with all of the African-American regiments formed in 1866
